Guitar Essay by Zoe (age 9)

I was inspired to play guitar by my third grade teacher, Mr. White. All of a sudden, he would grab hi guitar and start playing a song about math, or some random song that he made up; and everyone would sing along and laugh at the funny things he said. So I started taking lessons with him, and now my passion for guitar is blazing. I got even MORE inspired by guitar when my mom, my litter sister Gigi and I went to the Granada to see a music show, and there were kids about my age playing beautifully, and it sounded to me like a chorus of trumpets playing together. There were also two Brazilian men who played guitar for a living and they were REALLY good. They made it look pretty easy , but I could tell it wasn’t. All that picking, and moving your fingers at light speed sounds pretty hard, if you ask me. But that’s why I keep playing. I know that the guitar is the right instrument for me because I always get this WOW feeling when I hear guitar every time. I would like to learn the harp, but I want to get really good at guitar first. Without music, I don’t know where I’d be. I don’t know where we’d be.”

Good Times Gig rocked!

The first ever downtown Good Times Gig was a smashing good time! It was particularly special as we were celebrating Tyler Turner’s CD Release tonight! dsc_0049Thanks to Northstar Coffee Co for hosting, Dave Granada for playing drums. Also, huge thanks to Dan Bos for singing, playing, teaching, recording…well, just about everything! dsc_0024It was so fun to see Jack, Erik, Jade, Tobin and Tyler perform SO WELL in front of a large, enthusiastic audience. We will do it again in the spring! dsc_0036

Guitar Jedi Camp Rocked!!

jade-jediWe had two VERY successful Jedi camps this past summer of 2009! Jedi camps are intense, small camps for the highly committed guitar student that REALLY wants to grow. We dive in! Scales, theory, riffs, song-leading, recording, song-writing…they learn a LOT in one week.

Session #1: Tyler and Erik worked with Dan Bos and produced a rocking electric version of the Star Wars Theme Song!
LISTEN HERE: star-wars-theme

Session #2: Jade and Wyatt worked with Andy White and produced this killer version of Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer”!  Can you believe Jade’s rockin’ vocal track?!

Rock Camp Session #2

rock-camp-2Rock Camp’s second session was a great week! We were excited to have some rockers go to BOTH sessions of rock camp this summer. Equally exciting was a chance to welcome some brand new Good Timers!

Rock Camp 2009!

Rock Camp Session #1

Rock Camp Session #1

Rock Camp 2009 was a HUGE blast of fun! We had two sessions this summer and you can expect there to be more Rock Camps in 2010! All the rock campers enjoyed learning new riffs, chords and songs! A big highlight was learning how to rock with others…just like RockBand…only REAL! Each week concluded with a Grand Finale’ concert for all the parents to enjoy.

Rock Camp Underway!

Dan and campers working on a new tune!

This week is our first ever “Rock Camp” for Good Times Guitar.  We have 6 campers enjoying three hours of daily fun.  We start by singing together at 9am (each day a different student leads the songs!).  Then we all learn a new song that has easy chords for beginners but challenging riffs for the more advanced.  Students get some time to practice and then we have contests to see which rock camper learned the song the best!  After a short recess, we come back and learn another riff-based rocker followed by yet another guitar competition!  We are having so much fun!  We conclude our day with an “open mic” time where students can share any song they’d like in front of a captive audience.  We wrap up at noon and prepare for another 3 hours of rocking fun the next day!

It’s not too late to sign up for Session #2 of Rock Camp, July 20-24. Click HERE.
